About this collection

This site holds the following digitized publications from the Ohio State University Archives:

  • The Lantern Digital Archives features every issue of the Ohio State University student newspaper published from 1881 to 2018. We will add newer issues when possible. Current issues of the newspaper are available at https://www.thelantern.com
  • The Makio was the student yearbook that ran from 1880-2011. Several years went without publication: 1881, 1893, 1994-2000.
  • The Ohio State alumni magazine, called different names over time, began in 1909 as a quarterly newsletter. This site includes the magazine from 1909 until 2019. We will add additional years as soon as possible. Current issues of the magazine are available at https://www.osu.edu/alumni/news/ohio-state-alumni-magazine/issues/.
  • The Official Daily Bulletin ran as the daily update publication from 1920-1932.

This collection contains 19,552 issues comprising 267,641 pages and 1,234,876 articles.

The Lantern Project Support and Development

The Lantern Logo The Ohio State University´s administration provided funding for the digitization and online presentation of The Lantern. The project was coordinated within the University Libraries´ Preservation & Reformatting Department in cooperation with The Lantern Business Office. The digital images were scanned from original paper copies where available; all other images were scanned from microfilm. Paper copies were provided by The Lantern Business Office, and microfilm copies by the University Archives. Digital imaging of the paper copies was done by Brechin Imaging, in partnership with Digital Divide Data. Digital imaging of the microfilm was done by OCLC Preservation Services Center (now Backstage Library Works). The searchable online archive was engineered by Veridian Software.


The Alumni Magazine Project Support and Development

The Alumni Magazine Logo The Ohio State University´s Alumni Association gave permission for the University Archives to digitize and create an online presentation of the alumni magazine. The project was coordinated within the University Libraries´ Preservation & Reformatting Department in cooperation with the Archives. The Libraries’ staff created digital images by scanning the original paper copies. The searchable online archive was engineered by Veridian Software.
